Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has hit out at a section of Mount Kenya lawmakers who called a press conference to disown Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
48 MPs from the region on Thursday, September 12, 2024, issued a statement that endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the Mt Kenya kingpin.
Nyahururu declaration dismissed
However, Wamuchomba, in a statement issued via her official social media channels on Friday, September 13, 2024, has termed the 48 lawmakers’ declaration as a blessing in disguise.
The lawmakers, in their announcement dubbed the Nyahururu declaration, said Kindiki will be the region’s link to the presidency, a decision that has not sat well with Wamuchomba.
The former Kiambu County Woman Representative says the 48 MPs already lost touch with their voters when they voted in favour of the 2023 and 2024 Finance Bills.
Diversionary tactics
According to Wamuchomba, a press conference to disown DP Gachagua is a diversionary tactic from the pressing needs of the said lawmakers’ voters.
She further argues that the presser of the 48 MPs should have pressed for accountability of the missing kids of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy and the current eviction of Wakulima traders from the downtown Marikiti Market.
“The Nyahururu declaration meant to isolate HE Rigathi Gachagua is a blessing in disguise. As for me, I don’t care who the nexus to the national government is. All that matters is if the voters are getting the promised yields and returns in coffee, milk, and tea and if the million promises made by the KK government are delivered to our voters.
“What the 48 MPs should know is that they lost touch with their voters when they voted yes to the very punitive finance bills in 2023 and 2024. A press conference to disown the DP is a diversionary tactic from the very pressing needs of their voters. Such a presser of 48 MPs should have pressed for accountability of the missing kids of the Endarasha fire amongst the current eviction of Wakulima traders from ‘Marikiti’,” Wamuchomba stated.
Demolition victims
Wamuchomba went ahead to state that the lawmakers should have instead demanded a fair treatment of victims of house demolitions in Mathare, Pipeline, and Mai Mahiu dam tragedies.
Moreover, she has dismissed the Nyahururu declaration as hot air, aiming at stirring the political landscape to scare the Deputy President out of government.
“If these MPs were in touch with their voters, they should have demanded fair treatment of victims of house demolitions in Mathare, Pipeline, and Mai Mahiu dam tragedy victims. For now, their declaration was just hot air, aiming at stirring the political landscape to scare the Deputy President out of government. As they do so, the deputy president is getting bolder and mutating into a darling of most Kenyans,” she said.

Nyahururu declaration
The 48 MPs from the Mt Kenya region, in their Thursday presser, rejected the leadership of DP Rigathi Gachagua and instead endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the new link between the region and the Presidency.
The MPs, who spoke in Nyahururu Town, claim that Gachagua has been perpetuating politics on unity to support individual and personal ambition rather than the articulation, pursuit, and lobbying of the interests of Mt Kenya constituents.
“Our efforts to consolidate the developmental needs of the people we represent and canvass for their realization have been frustrated by the lack of a focal point of reference around whom we can channel the interests and priorities of our people to the government for actualization. Instead, the Mt Kenya Region has suffered high-octane politics around fathom unity to support individual and personal ambition rather than the articulation, pursuit, and lobbying of the interests of our constituents,” the statement read in part.
