United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairperson Cecily Mbarire has disowned the self-proclaimed Secretary General Joe Khalende.
Speaking outside UDA Headquarters on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the Embu Governor who doubles as the ruling party chairperson argued that the party organs did not sanction Khalende’s decision to dethrone the incumbent Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
Mbarire condemned Khalende’s action insisting that he defied the party constitution by installing himself as the party Secretary General.
“We condemn what transpired here regarding the party. We want to say that you cannot come and call you an official without following the laid down procedures.
“In our UDA Constitution we have proper structures which need to be followed in case of any change. You cannot call yourself an SG without following the required guidelines,” Mbarire insisted.
Goons at UDA
At the same time, Mbarire pointed an accusing finger at goons who she noted raided the party Headquarters and attacked the Khalende.
Mbarire assured UDA supporters that acts of hooliganism will not be tolerated.
“There are some goons who have been brought to wreak havoc here at the party. We condemn the actions and reiterate that we will not allow our party to operate that way.
“UDA is a peaceful party and we have never experienced what happened here today,” Mbarire added.
Urgent meeting
Following the Malala ouster drama, Mbarire announced an urgent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Friday, August 2, 2024.
“The party will be back on its feet and we will not allow this to continue. We will take necessary action on Friday after the NEC meeting,” Mbarire told journalists at UDA Headquarters.

Khalende injured in chaos
Before the UDA chairperson Mbarire gained control of the party offices, a group of goons stormed their headquarter and injured the self-proclaimed SG Khalende.
Security officers were forced to intervene, saving Khalende from the goons.
This came after he declared himself the UDA Secretary General while accusing Malala of abdicating his role.
“Malala has abdicated his role and duty as the SG of the ruling party. The critical role of the SG of the UDA party is the spokesperson of the party; he communicates and initiates meetings on behalf of the party. Clearly, Malala has joined our opponents. He is supporting the TAWE movement and agendas which contradict the ruling party,” Khalende stated.
“He has gone against our party leader…he is on the forefront against the formation of a broad-based government and I am here to confirm that he is no longer the SG of the UDA party. I Joe Khalende will be taking over as the SG of the UDA party.”
