Mumias East Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has faulted the government on its claim that the cost of living has been lowered.

Salasya, in a statement made via his official Instagram account on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, argued that the government is relying on the price of unga to justify its claims, yet the prices of other commodities are still high.

Price of commodities

For instance, the youthful lawmaker stated that the price of a bag of cement was much lower when the Kenya Kwanza government came to power, as compared to the current price.

Salasya further argued that the Ksh2,500 per bag fertilizer that the government has been talking about is nearly nonexistent, as he purchases at Ksh5400 per bag.

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) legislator warned that the Kenya Kwanza government should not rule by telling lies.

Wamesema the cost of living has come down, and inflation came down from 9% to 2%. When they came into power, mfuko wa simiti ulikuwa Ksh700 saa hizi mfuko wa simiti ni Ksh900 bei ya chuma imepanda mara dufu. Wasitudanganye na bei ya unga ama fertiliser hata hiyo ya Ksh2,500 sijui inapatikana wapi juu mimi kama farmer, I buy it at Ksh5,400 per bag.

“We can’t live by lies throughout. Let’s accept KK government plus broad-based ni bladfuckin. When they came, the cost of fuel was Ksh154 sahizi in Ksh180 sijui wanatubeba aje,” Salasya stated.

Kindiki on cost of living

The lawmaker was reacting to a statement made by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on the cost of living and the inflation rate.

Kindiki, in a statement shared via his official X account on November 10, 2024, when he attended a church service in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, said that the macroeconomic situation in the country is better than it was in 2022.

According to Kindiki, the inflation is now at 2.7%, the lowest in 17 years, arguing that it is the result of the heavy lifting, hard work, and progressive economic transformation policies initiated by President William Ruto.

“The macroeconomic situation in our country is better than it was in 2022. Inflation is now at 2.7%, the lowest in 17 years. This is the result of the heavy lifting, hard work, and progressive economic transformation policies initiated by President William Ruto that are bearing fruit.

“Progressively, the government is resolving the economic challenges and improving the livelihoods of our people by boosting their household incomes. We thank the Kenyan citizens for their patience,” Kindiki stated.
