Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

CSs vetting

The National Assembly will today continue vetting individuals that were nominated by President William Ruto for Cabinet Secretaries positions.

The 20-member parliamentary committee on appointments kicked off the process on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

On the second day of vetting, the CS nominee for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Andrew Mwihia Karanja, will be the first to appear before the vetting panel at 8 am.

He will be followed by Aden Barre Duale (Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry), Eric Muriithi Muuga (Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation), Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport), and Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u (Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy).

Scheduled power outage

Kenya Power has announced a scheduled power outage set for Friday, August 2, 2024, that will affect four counties across Kenya.

The outage is planned for maintenance purposes, with different regions experiencing temporary power cuts throughout the day.

In a statement on its official website, Kenya Power said, “Notice is hereby given under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules that the electricity supply will be interrupted as follows: periodic interruptions are necessary to facilitate maintenance and upgrades of power lines, connect new customers, or replace power lines during construction, etc.”

The temporary outage is expected to have a significant impact on various sectors and daily activities in these areas.

Kenya Power said counties affected by this blackout include Makueni, Kisii, Homa Bay, and Migori counties.

UDA NEC meeting

The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has convened a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting this Friday.

The meeting that was announced on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, followed an attempted ‘ouster’ of the party’s secretary-general, Cleophas Malala.

A group calling themselves ‘founding members of UDA’ stormed the ruling party’s headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, accusing Malala of sabotage and being a mule for the UDA’s opponents.

The group’s leader, Joe Khalende, announced himself as the new acting SG and said Malala had been barred from carrying out any UDA function.

UDA’s chairperson, Cecily Mbarire, told a press conference that on Wednesday morning, a group of political goons showed up at the party headquarters and beat up Khalende.

The group protested outside the premises and appeared to be Malala’s supporters.

Kenya’s Olympic campaign

Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot, Brian Komen and Reynold Cheruiyot are set for a challenging 1500m duel during in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Cheruiyot, 28, won the world title in 2019, lifted world silver in 2017 and finished second to Ingebrigtsen in Tokyo before he set his personal best of 3:28.28 in 2021 also followed Ingebrigtsen over the line in Oslo and Monaco this year, running 3:28.71 – his fourth-fastest time – at the latter.

On the other hand, Komen took three-and-a-half seconds off his personal best to run 3:28.80 for third in Monaco.

The Kenya unit, however, will have to deal with a battle against Norwegian superstar Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr, who have fast become one of the sport’s great rivalries.
