Reactions to Mwangaza’s impeachment

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been impeached following a contentious Senate vote, marking her as the third governor to be removed from office through impeachment.

This follows the previous impeachments of Kiambu’s Ferdinand Waititu and Nairobi’s Mike Sonko in 2020.

The Senate session, held late into the night, saw Senators—predominantly from the Kenya Kwanza coalition—vote to uphold all three charges against Mwangaza.

The charges, which led to her removal, were confirmed by a majority vote, despite her having previously survived two earlier attempts to oust her.

As the vote occurred during a late-night session, reactions to her impeachment are expected to unfold throughout the day.

The convention will feature keynote speeches from notable figures including Nancy Macharia, Chief Executive Officer of the Teachers Service Commission, and Laban Ayiro.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi attended the Tuesday session. Speaking on behalf of President William Ruto, urged education professionals to tackle critical issues such as conflict, climate change, and technology’s impact on education.

Mudavadi highlighted the dire situation in the Sahel region and other parts of Africa, where approximately 100 million students are out of school due to ongoing conflicts. He called on educational leaders to develop innovative solutions to these pressing global challenges.
