Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege on Thursday, September 12, 2024, faulted the Kenya Kwanza administration for abandoning their religious-centered strategy.
Speaking to a local radio station, the former Murang’a Women Representative highlighted the sudden shift following the anti-government protests that rocked the country.
Sabina Chege argued that before resolving to use political strategies to handle the issues that had bedevilled the country, the Kenya Kwanza administration leaned on religion.
She recalled February 14, 2023, when Kenya Kwanza organised a crusade at Nyayo Stadium to pray for rain in the country. After that religious gathering, the leaders led by President William Ruto credited the rainfall that pounded afterwards to their petitions to God.
However, Sabina posited that the trend has changed and now most leaders rarely start their speeches with the ‘Praise God’ phrase.
Warning
With the sudden change of tact, Sabina Chege warned that the people would be keen to evaluate the Kenya Kwanza administration ahead of the 2027 polls.
Sabina who is leading the Jubilee faction that broke away from Azimio la Umoja after the 2022 General Election, insisted that despite the political convergence under the broad-based government set-up, the electorates will gauge their next representatives through an issue-based model rather than popular tags used in the previous polls.
“Kenya Kwanza came in with the issue of church, we believe in God and I think every conversation they started with ‘Bwana Asifiwe (Praise God), but the Bwana Asifiwe ( Praise God) has faded.
“They have kept the Bible down now and they are looking for solutions from people and not God. Initially remember when there was no rain, there were prayers at Nyayo Stadium.
“But when the political issues came, they went to look for political friends so that they can come together to have numbers in Parliament. But what happened to your God that you so much believed in who gave you all the solutions,” Sabina Chege said during an interview on a local radio station.
She noted that most political leaders are clinging to the old tactics which will affect their 2027 campaigns ending up losing their elective positions. Sabina Chege also hinted at a complete shift in the voting pattern in the Mt Kenya region which has in many occasions voted as a block.
The lawmaker made reference to the Gen-Z led protests which she emphasised sent a strong message on the new political dispensation.
“If the young people agree to vote, things will change. It is going to be issue-based. We need to stop looking at the next election and look at what Kenyans want,” she stated.
