Zetech, Masinde Muliro claim victory at games
By Lucky Oluoch, April 4, 2023Zetech University and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) won the men’s and women’s titles respectively as the 15th edition of the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) games ended at the University of Eldoret at the weekend.
In a thrilling men’s final held on Sunday, Zetech University edged out Embu University 4-2 on penalties after the teams were deadlocked in a goalless draw in the normal time.
Zetech head coach, Bernard Kitolo could not hide his joy after the breakthrough and especially given that his team was among the inexperienced in the tournament.
“Our chemistry was up there and I must commend the players for a great show. Despite the win, the worst we can do is to rest on our laurels since we are looking forward to the East Africa University Games. I will be working on our forward play,” said Kitolo.
Maseno University bowed out of the competition after a crushing 4-0 defeat against the valiant Zetech in the semi-finals. The match saw the former struggle to contain their opponents as Zetech showcased their superiority with superb gaming.
The results follow Maseno’s 2-0 victory in the quarters over St. Paul’s University (SPU).
The women’s title was also settled on post-match penalties as MMUST overcame Kisii University in a 5-4 victory.
“We played well today but I must admit that the other universities gave us a challenge and kept pushing us. That is why we managed to get to the final and won. Playing against Kisii was tough but we finally won,” said MMUST head coach Selphine Muyonga.
Muyonga observed that she was glad that her team emerged as the winner after days of intensive training.
“These are the fruits of hard work. The players gave their all and this is a great pride to Zetech and Embu University,” she continued.
Both teams put up a spirited performance, with each displaying its tactical prowess as they battled for the title. In the end, the skill and determination of the two teams paid off with Zetech and MMUST being crowned champions.
The celebrations were electrifying, as both teams celebrated their victories with joy and excitement.
The players, coaches, and fans alike were ecstatic, as the teams brought the trophy home. It was a moment of pride and joy for all those involved.
More than 40 universities took part in this year’s 15th edition of the KUSF games.
The federation was however left devastated after a horrific road accident last week which claimed the lives of 17 students of Pwani University while on their way to the games in Eldoret.
The Secretary General, Joseph Sandaji, said that the federation had to re-pool all games involving Pwani University as a result of the accident.
He added: “We shall continue praying for the affected families because we know they are going through tough times as they mourn their departed loved ones.”
