World Athletics suspends Emmanuel Kiprop Kipruto over contract dispute

By , December 20, 2025

World Athletics has suspended Kenyan athlete Emmanuel Kiprop Kipruto from all athletics competitions after he failed to comply with an order issued by the Athletes’ Representatives Panel.

The global governing body confirmed on Saturday, December 20, 2025, that the suspension took effect immediately and will remain in place until Kipruto fully meets the conditions set by the Panel. The decision follows a dispute filed under the Athletes’ Representatives Rules, which regulate relationships between athletes and their authorised representatives.

According to World Athletics, the Panel ordered Kipruto to provide full disclosure of his contractual dealings with a Japanese club. This includes submitting copies of all relevant contracts and a detailed breakdown of his earnings linked to that employment. Kipruto did not comply with the directive within the required time, prompting the suspension.

The Panel also instructed Kipruto to reimburse expenses that his Athlete Representative had paid on his behalf. World Athletics said failure to repay these costs within the specified deadline would automatically extend the suspension, even if other disclosure requirements were met.

“World Athletics notes that the suspension will be lifted only upon confirmation that the requirements set out in the Panel’s decision have been satisfied in full,” World Athletics said in a statement.

The governing body added that it would lift the suspension only after confirming that Kipruto had satisfied all conditions outlined in the Panel’s decision. Until then, he cannot compete in any event held under World Athletics rules.

Administrative dispute, career on hold

The case centres on administrative and contractual compliance rather than performance or doping-related issues. World Athletics has not released further details on the nature of the dispute, the contracts involved, or the amount of money under question.

Kipruto’s suspension bars him from all international and domestic competitions sanctioned by World Athletics. This effectively sidelines him from the global athletics circuit until he resolves the matter.

Kipruto has competed across several distance events in recent years. He holds a personal best of 3:38.38 in the 1500 metres, recorded in Nairobi on January 5, 2024. In the 5,000 metres, he posted a time of 13:06.71 in Nobeoka, Japan, on May 4, 2025. He also clocked 27:29.10 in the 10,000 metres in Hachioji on November 23, 2024.

On the road, Kipruto recorded a time of 28:41 in a 10-kilometre race held in Guadalajara on August 13, 2023. These performances placed him among Kenya’s active middle- and long-distance runners competing abroad, particularly in Japan’s track circuit.
