Weekend of upsets as bigwigs fall in women FKF Cup
Bigwigs Gaspo Women FC and Vihiga Queens FC were dumped out of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF)-Women Cup Round 16 after losses to Nakuru City Queens and Kisped Queens respectively.
The pair incidentally are joint leaders in the Women Premier League currently and now both will have their focus on wrestling for the title. In both matches the ties had ended in draws before being decided on post-match penalties with City Queens and Kisped Queens holding firm to cruise into the quarter finals.
In the all Premiership game pitting City Queens and Gaspo Women played at Nakuru ASK Show Grounds, the match closed at 1-1 in regulation time before the former had the ultimate cheer after converting all their spot-kicks in a 5-4 victory. Gaspo opened the scoring in the 25th minute courtesy of an exquisite finish by the dangerous Mutukiza Wambui as the league leaders ended the first half leading 1-0.
In the second half,it was a fairly balanced game but Jacob Ghost Mulee’s Gaspo had a lot of possession and balls in promising areas of the pitch but failed to convert. Against the run of play in the 75th minute,City Queens had the ball in the feet of Stella Mulongo whose long cross found Melon Mulindi in a good position to displace her marker and hit the far post for the important equalizer.
Meanwhile Vihiga Queens also got punished at home (Mumias Sports Complex) for their lack of sharpness and aggressiveness on the ball. The match ended goalless against a resolute and stubborn Kisped Queens who play their trade in the FKF Division One League. Vihiga tactician Bernard Nyamunyamu made a series of change in personnel for this match but that did not yield much since the well organized opponents had a field day restricting and cutting out any danger. As it would be in penalties, the gods of favor fell upon Kisped who ended with a 6-5 win to qualify to the last eight.
Elsewhere, Thika Queens had to work extra hard to win 2-1 against fellow Premier League side Zetech Sparks at Ruaraka Grounds Saturday.
The highly tactical game saw the hosts Queens take a deserved lead in the 17th minute via the ever reliable Cris Kach following a defensive mix-up from the Sparks side.
Queens were to extend their lead albeit in the extra time of the first half after Linda Ajwang powered home a shot in the 48th minute to send her bench in raptures. The University side on their part had their consolation in the first minute of the second half following a fine start off the whistle. Yvonne Kavere was to get at the end of a fabulous pass down the right to slot into an empty net inside 49 minutes.
In the biggest score of the weekend,Ulinzi Starlets thumped a hapless Soccer Sisters 18-0 with the first half ending 11-0 against the team that had only seven players. The game had two hattricks with one player scoring five goals and a further three players on braces. The star of the match for the soldiers was Fasila Adhiambo who netted five times in the 17th minute,20th minute,35th minute,46th minute and 60th minute. This even as Lanoline Owino hit a hattrick in the 12th,21st and 63rd minutes just like Sofia Adhiambo in the 32nd,42nd and 86th minute.
