WCQ: Ryan Ogam shines as Harambee Stars thrash Seychelles

Kenya’s Harambee Stars bounced back from their setback against Gambia with a commanding 5-0 win over Seychelles in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Tuesday evening.

Ryan Ogam gave Kenya the lead in the 6th minute with a towering header from Duke Abuya’s cross. Collins Sichenje doubled the advantage in the 34th minute with a composed strike following another Abuya delivery. Ogam then grabbed his second of the game in the 37th minute, showing sharp instincts in the penalty area. Captain Michael Olunga capped off a dominant first half with a penalty in stoppage time to make it 4-0.

The second half saw Kenya maintain their momentum. Olunga added his second goal in the 66th minute, finishing Rooney Onyango’s pass with ease. Although the Stars created further opportunities, Seychelles avoided more damage, and the match ended 5-0.

Stars bounce back strongly

The victory lifted morale after last Friday’s 3-1 defeat to Gambia, which left Kenya with a steep climb in Group F. Head coach Benni McCarthy had warned his players against complacency, and they responded with energy, discipline, and attacking intent.

Seychelles, the lowest-ranked side in the group, struggled throughout the contest. The Pirates once again found themselves overwhelmed at the back and resorted to rough challenges that earned them three yellow cards in the first half.

Kenya’s performance, however, provided encouraging signs for the future. Ogam’s brace took his tally to six goals for Harambee Stars, further enhancing his reputation since joining Austrian side Wolfsberger AC. Sichenje impressed with his presence, while teenager Manzur Okwaro looked assured in his starting role. McCarthy also handed minutes to Boniface Muchiri and Moses Omondi, showing intent to build depth across the squad.

For Olunga, the brace moved him to 34 international goals, just one short of William Ouma’s all-time Kenyan record of 35.
