Wavinya applauds Kwathanze after defending volleyball title

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has congratulated the new Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national volleyball champions, Kwathanze Girls, following their cruise in the Term Two School games held in Kakamega on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

 In a statement shared through his X page moments after meeting the triumphant team, the governor termed the winning feat a proud moment for the county and the nation.

“Congratulations to the Kwanthanze Secondary School Girls Volleyball Team on their remarkable victory at the National Secondary School Volleyball Championships in Kakamega, making Machakos and Kenya proud.

She further challenged the volleyball queens to aim higher as they venture into the upcoming East Africa games to be held in Kakamega County.

“As you prepare to represent our nation at the East African Secondary School Ball Games to be held at Kakamega High School, I wish you even more outstanding achievements. Go make history and fly our flag high. I remain committed to supporting and celebrating the excellence of our young talents,” she pledged.

Kwanthanze exerted its dominance in the discipline after defending the national volleyball title with a 3-0 set victory over Kesgon from Rift Valley.

Kwanthanze and Cheptil dominate

The victory earned the team the honour of carrying the country’s hopes in the regional games for another year running.

The 2022 EA champions will be joined by former East Africa champions Kesogon, who also sealed their spot by finishing as runners-up.

The boys crown went to Cheptil High School boys volleyball team, who emerged victorious against Malava Boys after edging the Western rivals in a 3-0 set.

The two finalists were joined by Mwalupamba (Coast) and Gogo (Nyanza) in the boys category as teams to have made it to the East Africa Games.

In the girls’ category, bronze winners Bishop Sulumeti from the Western region and Soweto from Nairobi also earned their place at the East Africa games.

The conclusion of KSSSA Term Two games saw the unveiling of the list of triumphant schools heading into the East African games.

The list includes newcomers who announced their names at the national stage to join several established individuals in various disciplines. Among the newcomers to the fold is Central Kinale Girls, who served up a stunning upset in the girls’ seven rugby, edging out St. Joseph’s Girls (JOGA) of Rift Valley to lift the national girls title.

Kinale Girls

The school located in Lari Sub County, Kiambu County, joined St. Peter’s Mumias, who clinched the National Sevens Title after a decade with a comeback 14-12 win over Koyonzo Boys in a tense final clash at Kakamega Bullring.

On the football scene, St Joseph’s Boys, who edged Musingu High School in a dramatic final at the Mumias Sports Complex, will be the new favourites for the football games alongside the Scorpions, who emerged as the runners-up.

The two will be joined by Nairobi representatives Highway School and Agai Mixed School from Nyanza, who emerged as fourth.
