Was there a leadership coup at KMSF?
Fighting at the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) reached new heights on Wednesday after veteran administrator Jim Kahumbura declared himself as the new chairman.
However, incumbent Maina Muturi quickly trashed the announcement as a failed coup.
KMSF Limited Board of Directors held a chaotic meeting at Sikh Union Club where two members walked out in protest and three members were thrown out of the meeting before Kahumbura was controversially made the interim chairman until the next Annual General Meeting (AGM).
An unsigned document from KMSF Secretariat, the board appointed Rohit Budhia as the interim Motor Sport Council chairman following the departure of the previous chairman, Sukhdev Chaggar.
The Board noted that the KMSF Appeals Board had over-reached its mandate and declared the purported decisions of the Appeals Board as ultra vires (without legal basis)
In the communiqué, the Board also passed a resolution stating that the next AGM of the Federation will be held on October 9.
“Our attention is drawn to an unsigned press release dated August 28, 2024, allegedly from KMSF. The KMSF Board would like to clarify that the meeting held on Wednesday at Sikh Union Club was not a bona fide KMSF Board meeting and did not meet the required threshold. During this meeting, Jim Kahumbura threw out the Company secretaries and some directors walked out in protest,” Maina Muturi stated in a signed press release.
He added, “The chairman of KMSF remains Maina Muturi. Changes to the Motorsport Council and the KMSF Appeals Board can only be carried out by the KMSF Board. There have been no changes to these Councils or Boards. A properly constituted Board Meeting and the AGM will be announced in due course.”
