Wanyonyi shines bright in London 800m Diamond League triumph

By , July 19, 2025

Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi lit up the London Diamond League on Saturday, July 19, 2025, by storming to a commanding victory in the men’s 800m final with a meeting record of 1:42.00.

Wanyonyi, 20, left no doubt about his elite status on the global stage, outpacing a strong field that included Canada’s Marco Arop and Great Britain’s Max Burgin.

The Kapsabet-based runner made a tactical surge with 400m to go, resisting pressure from Arop, who momentarily edged ahead at the 300m mark.

But Wanyonyi, running with poise and power, switched gears to reclaim the lead and cross the line first in what is now the third-fastest time in the world this year all belonging to him.

The rest of the top six featured Bryce Hoppel of the United States (1:42.71), Mohamed Attaoui (1:43.01), and Donavan Brazier (1:43.08), all delivering season-best performances in one of the year’s most competitive 800m races.

Fresh off the win, Wanyonyi is expected to jet back to Nairobi to compete in the Athletics Kenya trials for the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships.

The trials are scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Alongside Wanyonyi, top Kenyan athletes such as Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Agnes Ngetich, and Ferdinand Omanyala are expected to feature in the high-stakes trials that will determine Kenya’s squad for Tokyo.

Wanyonyi’s London triumph adds to his Monaco Diamond League win earlier this month, solidifying his momentum ahead of Tokyo, where he hopes to clinch the global 800m title for the first time in his career.
