Wanyama tips Morocco to win CHAN 2024

By , August 26, 2025

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has tipped Morocco to lift the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 trophy, pointing to their strength, consistency, and tournament pedigree.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic midfielder, who enjoyed a glittering career in Europe before retiring from international football, shared his thoughts during a live football analysis show on Monday evening, August 25, 2025. Wanyama said he had closely followed Morocco’s progress in the tournament and was impressed by how the Atlas Lions handled East African sides Kenya and Tanzania earlier in the competition.

“Did you see how Morocco gave us problems? Tanzania also felt it,” Wanyama noted. “I think Morocco have every weapon to win the trophy.”

Morocco tipped as favourites

Morocco, two-time CHAN champions, have looked sharp throughout the tournament and are now bracing for a tough semi-final battle against defending champions Senegal in Kampala. The West African giants, known for their physicality and defensive organisation, will be looking to retain their crown, but Wanyama believes Morocco’s all-round strength will give them the edge.

The other semi-final will see Sudan clash with Madagascar in Dar es Salaam. Sudan reached the last four after eliminating Algeria in a tense penalty shoot-out, while Madagascar continued their run in the quarterfinals.

Away from the CHAN debate, Wanyama also opened up about his future after hanging up his boots for Kenya. The former Harambee Stars skipper revealed he has embarked on a coaching course and is working on establishing an academy in Nairobi to nurture young talent. He emphasised his passion for helping the next generation of Kenyan footballers gain the exposure and opportunities he had during his career abroad.

As the CHAN 2024 tournament heads into its final week, excitement is building across East Africa. The grand finale is scheduled for August 31, 2025, where one of Morocco, Senegal, Sudan, or Madagascar will be crowned champions. For Wanyama, however, the verdict is already in: Morocco remains the team to beat.
