Former Malkia Strikers star Sharon Chepchumba has landed in Azerbaijan ahead of her new challenge with the Genke Volleyball Club.

In a statement on Facebook on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the Kenya Volleyball Federation confirmed the player’s arrival in West Asia, where she is set to embark on a new challenge.

“Sharon Chepchumba touched down safely in Azerbaijan to join Gəncə Voleybol Klubu. New chapter, same fire. Let’s wish her the very best as she flies the flag high once again for the 2025/2026 season,” a statement from KVF read.

Chepchumba, simply known as Chumba, sealed a move to Azerbaijan on Monday, July 28, 2025.

“Our team has signed a contract with Sharon Chepchumba, a member of the Kenyan national team. The volleyball player spent the last season in Vietnam’s Lào Cai. During his career, the player wore uniforms in Kenyan, Turkish, and Greek clubs,” the club stated.

The two-time Olympian with Malkia Strikers spent her previous season in Vietnam, featuring for Giang Lao Cai.

 Other than stints in Vietnam, Chumba also boasts vast experience in Turkey and Greece as well as stints with the Kenyan senior women’s volleyball side, Malkia Strikers.

Professional profile

started her career as a footballer before switching to volleyball, where she has gone on to make her name.

She honed her skills at Kwanzanze Secondary School under the youth coach, Justin Kigwari. The Kitale-born starlet joined the Machakos Education Centre from Tartar Secondary School.

She won the East African Games title with Kwanzanze in 2015, and that achievement brought the limelight to her growing career.

2023 MVP

The outside attacker is also a recognised winner on the international stage; she was part of the Kenyan volleyball team that dominated the continent in 2023 alongside Mercy Moin, Yvonne Adhiambo, Jane Wacu, and the late Janet Wanja. Chepchumba has won major honours, including gold medals at the 2019 African Games and the 2023 African Championship with the Kenyan national team. 

She also won the Africa Club Championship with KCB and is a winner of the Kenya League. Additionally, she was named Africa’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2021/22 African Club Championships and the MVP of the 2023 African Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship.
