Vihiga Queens set sight on CECAFA title as they depart for event
By Vincent Voiyoh, August 11, 2023Former CECAFA Champions Vihiga Queens begin their quest to reclaim the regional title against Zanzibar’s New Generation at the Omondi Stadium in Kampala on Monday.
The multiple Kenya Women Premier League champions were set to jet out for Kampala yesterday evening and have been upbeat ahead of the tourney that is set for Saturday August 12 kick off in Uganda.
Coach Charles Okere who led the brilliant Queens to their inaugural CECAFA title in 2021 s full of optimism that his charges will show the much needed character at the big stage to mirror their astonishing performances three years ago.
“We have trained well for the four weeks we have been in Nairobi for our camp.We are more than ready to battle our opponents and my players are looking forward for another good show.We are going there as champions since we didn’t participate in the last edition,” Okere told People Daily Sport.
Comparing the team that sampled the regional success in 2021,Vihiga seems debilitated from the outside.
Former captain Enoz Mango, right-back Vivian Nasaka deadly striking trio of Jentrix Shikangwa, Topister Situma and Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi all left the club for paid ranks in Africa and beyond.
However, coach Okere is has dismissed the fears that the current crop of new players may fail to spur at the Uganda tournament saying it is time for the new comers to show their prowess at the regional stage just like the players who left for greener pastures abroad.
“There is no bad player or good player according to me. What I know is the every player deserves a chance and that is what makes the difference. We respect the players who were here with us but now we have other player and It is there time to show also what they offer, and I truly trust in them.”
