University of Embu Half Marathon raises funds for needy students
By Brian Malila, November 1, 2023The University of Embu is targeting Sh10 billion in the endowment fund to reach more students from underprivileged backgrounds studying at the institution.
Speaking during a Half Marathon organised by the university to raise funds for the endowment, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut highlighted how the fund has supported 600 financially disadvantaged students at the University, preventing potential dropouts due to fee shortages.
He emphasised that the university’s vision is to raise Sh10 billion for investment, with the returns assisting more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access education without financial constraints.
“The aim of this fund is to support needy students in our institution and other projects. We aim to grow the fund so that we can invest in various projects, with the returns benefiting more students from poor backgrounds,” he explained.
In the marathon, Harbin Marathon ( held in China) Gold medalist Michael Kamau emerged as the winner of the Inaugural University of Embu Endowment Half Marathon, finishing in a time of 1:03:58. Joyce Wanjugu clinched the first position in the women’s category, finishing in 1:17:41.
The chairman of Athletics Kenya (AK) Embu Branch, Stephen Njeru, highlighted the struggles of local athletes and urged corporate entities to sponsor sports activities. Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji appealed to the Ministry of Sports for increased support for upcoming sports talents.
Established in 2018, the Endowment Fund aims to provide financial aid to academically bright and economically disadvantaged students, as well as facilitate the development of the institution’s infrastructure.
The university has implemented policies and guidelines to safeguard and expand the fund through a robust governance structure.
