Undisputed school champs

Wiyeta Girls High School was yesterday crowned National Secondary Schools games girls football champions for the 10th time after beating Dagoretti Mixed Secondary 4-2 on post-match penalties.

The mouth watering contest needed post-match penalties to determine the winner after the teams had played to a barren draw during normal time.

Velma Auma was the hero for Wiyeta after saving two penalties from Patience Kasiutawa and Miriam Susan to gift her side the coveted win at Nakuru High School.

Wiyeta head coach Edgar Manyara said after the match that he was happy with the win saying the 10th title was a testament of the hard work they had put in the games to stamp their authority.

“I have players who are willing to work and they have showcased that they are now ready for a bigger challenge in Arusha and we are going to take the title,” said Manyara.

In the boys’ category, Ebwali Secondary School emerged victorious after edging out Highway in an emotional match to win the tournament for the first time ever.

Tom Osekio scored through a direct free kick after Alex Tindi was brought down at the edge of the box to put Ebwali in the front foot.

Ebwali made their intentions in the match known with Derrick Olinga forcing a great save from Highway’s Paul Okumu.

After the final whistle, fans swarm the field in wild celebrations to mark the end of the tournament on a high.

Ebwali head coach Francis Muhambe said he was happy with the results saying the win was one of its kind as they have beaten a strong team.

He, however, said the team had a few challenges including travel documents which are costly calling on KSSSA to wade in and assist in the travels.

“The ministry is taking care of the coach and twenty players though my technical bench has not been catered for, we would love to be assisted in that,” said Muhambe.

He said they have a few injuries adding that they will appeal to KSSSA to see if they can bring on board new players who are in school to boost their strength.
