Ulinzi Starlets win 2023 FKF Super Cup
Ulinzi Starlets, the winners of the FKF Cup, secured victory in the 2023 FKF Super Cup by defeating FKF Premier League Champions Vihiga Queens 2-0 in a match held at Utalii Grounds.
This match served as a curtain-raiser for the new season and featured teams that had claimed silverware in women’s competitions during the previous season.
Ulinzi Starlets goals
Ulinzi Starlets managed to score in both halves, setting a positive tone for the upcoming season.
In the 40th minute, Cindy Ngaira set up Joy Kinglady for the opening goal, giving Ulinzi a 1-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Ulinzi extended their lead when Mercy Airo found the net in the 58th minute.
With the Super Cup triumph behind them, both teams are now focused on the 2023/24 season of the FKF Women’s Premier League (FKF-WPL), which has been rescheduled to begin on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
This change in the start date was prompted by this curtain-raiser for the season, the FKF Women’s Super Cup.
Furthermore, the decision to postpone the official start of the FKF-WPL season was made to accommodate the ongoing preparations of the Harambee Starlets for their Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against Cameroon.
Ulinzi Stars players in National team
Many players from both Ulinzi Starlets and Vihiga Queens were representing the national team, leading to depleted squads for their respective clubs.
In the opening round of the FKF-WPL, defending champions Vihiga Queens will begin their campaign to retain the title against the formidable Ulinzi Starlets.
Runners-up from the previous season, Gaspo FC, will face Bunyore Starlets in what promises to be a fiercely competitive match.
Newcomers Bungoma Queens will test their abilities against league returnees, Kibera Soccer Ladies, while another top-tier newcomer, Soccer Assassins, will face Kenya Police Bullets.
The transfer window, which opened on Friday, July 21, 2023, closed on Friday, September 29, 2023, at 5 pm, providing teams with the opportunity to strengthen their squads for what is expected to be an exciting season of women’s football in Kenya.
