Uhuru leads fans in watching Keino Classic at Kasarani

President Uhuru Kenyatta led fans in watching the second edition of the ABSA Kip Keino Classic at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani

Kenyatta was flanked by Sports CS Amina Mohammed and legendary Kipchoge Keino ahead of the much awaited event between American sprinter Justin Gatlin and Ferdinand Omanyala in the 100 m finals.

Kasarani is hosting athletes from across the world for the World Athletics Continental Gold Tour dubbed Absa Kip Keino Classic.

US-athlete Fred Kerley who is also the Olympic men 100 m won silver medalist, won the 200 m race in a time of 19.78 in Nairobi.

Olympic 200 m silver medalist Christine Mboma proved too strong for her opponents as she stormed to victory over the distance.

Mboma, the World Under-20 record holder, clocked 22.39 seconds ahead of Josee Marie Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast who finished second in 22.98 as Aminatou Seyni of Nigeria closed the podium in 23.33.

World 5,000 m silver medalist Margaret Chelimo took the top honours in the women’s 5000 m.

Chelimo destroyed the field as she dominated the 12-lap race, clocking 14:55.27 ahead of compatriots Eva Cherono 15:12.16 and Lilian Kasait 15:17.77.

Philemon Kiplimo took victory in the men’s 10,000 m when he clocked 28:37.96 ahead of Rueben Longosiwa who came second in 28:38.97 as Geoffrey Kipchumba placed third 28:38.99.

The much awaited race between Gatlin and Omanyala will be the last event of the day as the two speedsters aim at lighting up the Kasarani stadium.
