Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League outfit Tusker have opened negotiations to acquire a women’s football team in readiness for Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions next season.

The move comes on the heels of CAF issuing guidelines that require clubs participating in their competitions to adhere to. In the new set of rules and regulations issued by the African body and which qualified clubs must comply with by the deadline day of June 30 or risk being disqualified, one of the requirements is for the clubs to have an active women’s football team.

The Brewers CEO Samuel Nzau outlined the team’s plan to purchase a women’s team as they still stand a chance to represent the country in either Confederation Cup or Champions League.

“Even before CAF sent the requirements, we had started engaging different women’s clubs. There are two ways we are looking at this,” Nzau told the club’s YouTube channel.

“Number one, we can go the way at which we get to buy a women’s team and absorb it into the Tusker family, or number two, we can partner with a women’s team and through that build an affiliation to Tusker.

He added: “At this moment, there are conversations ongoing, and by the end of this season we will either have bought a women’s team or be affiliated to a women’s team.”

Nzau further revealed the Brewers will target to reach the group stage of any caf competition next season, insisting they will do everything to support the technical bench.

“When we were planning for the season, our number one goal was not only to retain our title but to play in Continental football. Our ambition is to get at least to the group stages,” he said, adding: “We are supporting our technical bench led by Robert Matano to ensure that he has the best at his.”

Gor Mahia, Tusker, and Homeboyz are on course to earn tickets for continental action. While Gor and Tusker are fighting it out for the league title, which earns a Champions League ticket, the Brewers are also in the race to win the FKF Cup as they are scheduled to face Homeboyz in the final.

The domestic Cup winners are guaranteed a direct ticket to the Confederation Cup. Last week, Homeboyz paraded their women’s team, Kakamega Starlets, which is taking part in the FKF Western Women region league that comprises nine teams.
