They don’t trust women coaches – Police Bullets head coach Odemba
FKF Women Premier League Champions Police Bullets FC head coach, Beldine Odemba, believes that many football executives in the country still don’t trust women coaches.
Odemba, who led the Bullets to their first FKFWPL title in their debut season in top-flight football, is the only female coach in the women’s premier league. In an interview with Sport On, she expressed her view that many people in the country still see football as a man’s game.
“Most of our bosses still don’t appreciate and trust women coaches. They think male coaches are better than female coaches. I think we still have that mentality that it’s a men’s game,” Odemba said.
However, she also noted that women have been slow in pursuing coaching certifications and advancing to higher levels of the game.
“It took us a long time before we became interested in being coaches and just coaching at high levels,” Odemba added.
Bullets are champions
The Bullets have already been crowned champions with one match still to play after close rivals and former champions Vihiga Queens drew against Nakuru City Queens, effectively handing the title to the Bullets. The Bullets lead the table with 46 points from 18 matches, securing 14 wins and four draws while scoring 51 goals.
Vihiga Queens are second with 41 points, having won 12 matches, drawn five, and lost only one match to the Bullets in a 1-0 defeat in February at the Police Sacco Stadium.
Thanks to their championship win, the Bullets will represent the country in the fourth edition of the Cecafa Women Club Championships in Ethiopia this August.
Odemba is among the 18 coaches who recently received their CAF A coaching licenses, and she reiterated her stance on having more qualified women coaches on the scene.
“I’m glad that we also had women premier league coaches in the course, which means 3 or 4 teams are doing well. Other coaches have done their CAF B licenses, while others have done C. So, if we embrace these licenses and learn as women teams’ coaches, we are going to hit the headlines in the Champions League shortly,” Odemba commented after the ceremony.
