Title-winning coach reveals why he orders players to walk barefoot

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained why he has been encouraging his players to walk barefoot.
Mokwena, the coach of Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela, has said such an exercise has been linked with many positive impacts, including spiritual benefits.
“I’ve been asked by several people why I walk barefooted and get the players to walk barefooted. Here’s a summarized reason why and the benefits:
“Walking barefoot, also known as grounding or earthing, has been associated with several potential spiritual and physiological benefits,” Mokwena, who led the Brazilians to their historic Premier Soccer League title last season, said.
He delved deeply and grounded his argument on spiritual benefits by pointing out the benefits of barefoot walking.
“From a spiritual standpoint, walking barefoot can be seen as a way to connect with nature and the earth.
“It’s believed to help people feel more grounded, centred, and connected to the world around them. This practice is thought to promote mindfulness and a sense of being present in the moment,” Mokwena, whose elevation to the top position at the PSL giants in October 2022 attracted praise and criticism alike, added.
More benefits
On the physiological benefits, Mokwena linked barefoot walking to better sleep and an anti-oxidant exercise.
“Physiologically, proponents of grounding suggest that walking barefoot allows the body to absorb free electrons from the earth through the soles of the feet.
“This is thought to have antioxidant effects, reducing inflammation and improving overall well-being. Some small studies have shown potential benefits such as better sleep, reduced pain, and lower stress levels, although more research is needed in this area.
“It’s important to note that while many people find walking barefoot to be a positive experience, these benefits are largely anecdotal.
“As with any health practice, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your routine,” he concluded.
Mokwena led the Tshwane giants to the inaugural African Football League title, and his side is likely to retain the South African league title.
