2 ODM delegates killed in road accident en route to grassroots elections in Homa Bay

Two ODM delegates died in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a lorry at Arujo Bridge along the Homa Bay-Rongo road in Homa Bay Town Constituency on Monday, April 7, 2025.
The two were on their way to participate in the ongoing ODM grassroots elections at Kabunde Multi-Purpose Hall, where ward-level elections were being conducted.
A third person, who was also on the ill-fated motorcycle, narrowly escaped death but sustained multiple fractures.
The incident occurred when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.
Homa Bay Sub-county Police Commander Emmanuel Kiplagat confirmed the incident, stating that one person died instantly, while the second succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital.
He said the lorry was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the accident occurred.
“The lorry driver had moved to the right side of the road to overtake. Unfortunately, he seemed to have underestimated the distance with the oncoming motorcycle,” Kiplagat said.
The lorry, which belongs to a courier company, was heading to Homa Bay Town.
According to the officer, the two deceased persons are yet to be identified, as neither had identification documents at the time of the accident.
Kiplagat urged road users to observe traffic regulations.
“There is a tendency among rogue road users to insist they are in the right after an accident. Let the police investigate and determine the next course of action,” he said.
Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Vincent Oduor said one of the ODM supporters died while being attended to in the operating theatre.
“He was brought in with multiple fractures but passed away during surgery,” Dr Oduor said.
He added that the third victim was also taken to the theatre, where doctors managed to stabilize him.
The tragic accident occurred just hours after two other youths in Ndhiwa Constituency, Homa Bay, sustained serious injuries following violent clashes between rival factions in the same grassroots elections.
Elvice Omondi, 25, had his left wrist chopped off with a machete, while David Oluoch suffered deep neck cuts and a fractured left arm after being attacked by suspected hired goons at Buche Primary School.
