Thika par-72 course to stage gripping showdown among East Africa’s finest golfers
Thika Sports Club will host the latest leg of the ongoing NCBA Golf Series tomorrow where over 200 golfers from Thika and neighbouring clubs will compete on the club’s challenging par-72 course for a chance to advance to the Series grand finale.
The tournament is set to start at 7am.
John Gachora, NCBA Group Managing Director, praised the event’s role in community building stating, “We are thrilled to bring the NCBA Golf Series to Thika Sports Club. These events go beyond competition; they are about fostering connections and showcasing our commitment to our stakeholders.”
Similarly, Thika Sports Club Captain Moses Gatonye expressed enthusiasm for the tournament aboserving: “We’re honored to host the NCBA Golf Series. Our course is prepared to offer a challenging and enjoyable experience, and we are grateful to NCBA for their continued support.
The 18-hole Thika Sports Club, established in 1922, has a rich golfing history and has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the annual Winston Churchill Tournament.
The NCBA Golf Series follows the 9th leg held at Kenya Airforce Golf Club, where Harun Wanyama won the Division One title with 40 points.
Other notable winners included Wally Bitok in Division Two Men’s, Carol Nthiwa in Division Two Ladies, Col. Henry Mwereneru in Division Three, and Hakeem Mutungi in the Junior category.
Simultaneously, the 47th Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship began yesterday and runs through Sunday at Nyali Golf and Country Club.
The event, known as the Kenyatta Memorial Bowl, honours Kenya’s first President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
It has attracted 96 players from across East Africa and beyond.
Prominent contenders include Michael Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club, Michael Alunga from Uganda, Adel Balala of Kenya, and John Lejirma of Railway Golf Club.
The champion will secure an automatic spot in the 2025 Magical Kenya Open, a significant opportunity for emerging golfers.
Chris Kinuthia, the tournament director, expressed gratitude to NCBA for their sponsorship and to Nyali Golf and Country Club for hosting.
“Their support underscores a commitment to fostering talent and promoting sports excellence,” he remarked.
