Team Kenya hits double digits in medal count after Wanyonyi’s gold

By , September 20, 2025

Kenya’s medal count in the ongoing World Athletics Championship in Tokyo has reached 10 after Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s triumph in the men’s 800 M finals this Saturday, September 20, 2025.

According to an updated medal standings by the WAC, Wanyonyi’s medal was Kenya’s sixth gold medal and Team Kenya’s tenth overall.

The feat has Kenya firmly perched at second on the medal haul, with 10 medals fewer than the USA, which tops proceedings with 12 gold medals, four silver and as many bronze.

Canada, on four medals (three gold, one bronze), is ranked third with the Netherlands, Spain and New Zealand wrapping up the top five.

Wanyonyi braved a star-studded field comprising Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who ran a season’s best 1:41.90, and Canada’s Marco Arop to boss the 800 m track.

It was also a moment of redemption after he narrowly missed gold in Budapest in 2023, losing to Arop. This time, Wanyonyi stayed composed, controlled his pace, and produced a strong final kick to claim his first world title.

His success came moments after Beatrice Chebet delivered another golden moment with victory in the women’s 5,000 metres on Saturday, September 20, 2025.

Chebet, who had already won the 10,000 metres earlier in the week, crossed the line ahead of her compatriot Faith Kipyegon, who crossed the line in 14:55.07 for silver.

Kenya’s medal hunt

Beatrice and Faith lead Kenya’s medal tally with two each.

Faith Cherotich bagged Kenya’s fourth gold medal in the Women’s 3000 M steeplechase after defeating Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi.

Other winners for Kenya in the race include Peres Jepchirchir, who struck gold in the women’s marathon and Edmund Serem, who earned the nation’s third medal in the bronze in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.

Dorcus Ewoi delivered another silver medal after completing an epic 1-2 finish in her debut appearance at the world stage, finishing second behind Faith Kipyegon in the 1500M on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
