Strathmore Leos beat KCB to clinch Embu 7s title
By Kenneth Mwenda, August 24, 2025Strathmore Leos held off a determined KCB comeback to claim a thrilling 31-21 victory and lift the Embu 7s title at the ASK Ngujiri Showground on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
The win brings the Leos within striking distance of KCB in the National Sevens Circuit, cutting the bankers’ lead to just three points and setting up a tense finish in the final legs of the series.
The match got off to an electrifying start as Strathmore Leos showcased their pace and precision. Nygel Amaitsa picked up a loose pass deep inside his 22 and sprinted the length of the field to score the opener. Soon after, Arnold Muita created space for Victor Mola to cross, with Muita adding the conversion to take a 12-0 lead.
Stanislaus Shikoli capitalised on a fumbled high ball to land a third try, before Barnabas Owuor cut through the KCB defence to extend the advantage to 24-0.
KCB finally responded late in the first half when Floyd Wabwire scored, with Brian Wahinya converting to reduce the deficit to 24-7 at halftime.
The second half saw KCB press hard, taking advantage of Gabriel Ayimba’s yellow card. Wabwire scored twice in quick succession, with Wahinya converting both, bringing the score to a tense 24-21. Momentum appeared to be shifting in favour of the bankers, but Strathmore remained composed.
Substitute Samuel Wafula struck late, slicing through KCB’s defence and beating Vincent Onyala to score the decisive try. Muita added the extras to seal the 31-21 victory and the Embu 7s crown.
Leos seek circuit glory
Earlier, Strathmore had eliminated Menengai Oilers in the semifinals, a sweet revenge after losing to them at the Christie 7s last week. Menengai Oilers finished third after thrashing MMUST 31-0, while Kenya Harlequins claimed fifth spot with a 15-5 win over Kabras.
In the Challenger Trophy final, Catholic Monks edged Mean Machine 15-5, and Impala RFC took the 13th-place playoff with a 19-5 victory over Nondescripts. In the women’s category, Mwamba were crowned champions after a flawless round-robin campaign.
