Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction with the progress at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret after he visited the facility for inspection and told contractors of all stadiums to up their game.
The purpose of the inspection was to ensure that the stadium is ready for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 bid. However, Namwamba was disgruntled with the slow pace and quality of the construction work. During his visit, Namwamba emphasised the importance of delivering a stadium that meets the highest standards set by CAF and FIFA, while also ensuring value for money.
He urged contractors of all stada to expedite their work and complete it within specified timelines. He said the government has already provided the necessary resources to facilitate the construction process.
Namwamba stated that substandard workmanship would not be tolerated, and all contractors involved in the development of sports facilities would be held accountable. He highlighted Eldoret’s reputation as the City of Champions, home to world-class athletes, and emphasized the need for top-notch training facilities.
“We have come to send a message that there is a new way of doing things, one that is keen on the value for money, and the highest standards possible. We also want the constructors to work within the timelines to deliver a quality facility that meets the CAF and FIFA standards,” said Namwamba.
Principal Secretary Peter Tum echoed Namwamba’s sentiments and emphasized their commitment to building a stadium that lives up to Eldoret’s title as the ‘City of Champions’. He mentioned they have a comprehensive masterplan in place to guide the construction process and ensure that all work is carried out to the required standards.
The leaders noted that the government is dedicated to ensuring the timely completion of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
with the aim of providing world-class sporting infrastructure for the athletes and promoting Eldoret’s status as a hub of sporting excellence.
