The national women’s football team has been promised Sh 5m by the government should they see off Botswana in a two-legged clash and qualify for the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has made the pronouncement noting that he is eager to see the Kenyan queens secure a ticket to the continental women’s football bonanza set for Morocco next year.

“Harambee Starlets are going to the final hurdle to qualify for the Women’s Cup of Nations against Botwasana and if should they qualify have Sh5m for them. That means what we are doing for the men’s teams, it what we extended and available to our women’s team,” Ababu said.

Starlets are seeking to secure WAFCON berth for the second time after their maiden appearance in 2016.

The Beldine Odemba coached side have been boosted with the arrival five foreign based players at their camp at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

The players includes skipper Ruth Ingosi, Corazon Aquino, Elizabeth Wambui, Caroline Rufa of Simba Queens, Lilian Awour (Soyaux Charente) and Lorna Nyarinda (FK Apolonia Fier).

“It is another moment of pride for me to receive yet another call up to represent my country. We are all ready to push ourselves so as we achieve our goals.Botswana is a good team but as Kenyans, we are well equipped to face anyone and emerge victorious.

We promise to give a good show in the two matches and secure a place at the Cup of Nations,” goalkeeper Lillian Awour told People Sport.

Captain Ingosi has outlined her satisfaction with the mood in the Kenyan camp saying they are excited to be back and urged fans to throng Nyayo Stadium in mass next week on Wednesday as they target Botswana’s downfall.

Harambee Starlets who eliminated Cameroon last September will be in action at the Nyayo National Stadium against Botwasana on November 29 and the return leg is scheduled for December 5 in Gaborone.

The winner of the fixture will book a flight to Morocco next year for the African Women’s Cup of Nations.
