World’s 10,000 metres silver medallist Stanley Waithaka Mburu has pulled out of this weekend’s national trials for the World Championships after suffering a groin injury.

His coaches, Francis Kamau Master and Daniel Njenga, said the Japan-based athlete picked the injury during training in Nyahururu at the weekend.

“It is disappointing but there is nothing one can do if the body is not okay,” Kamau said yesterday adding that Athletics Kenya (AK) has already been informed about it.

Pulling out of the Championship, Mburu now leaves his companion Emmanuel Kiprop to fight the battle in the long-distance race.

Meanwhile, two other Japan-based runners Teresia Muthoni Gateri and Margaret Ekidor have promised to give the trials their best shot.

Speaking after doing final speed work at the Nyahururu Stadium yesterday morning, the runners who will be participating in the women’s 5000m, two said they hope for a good race.

The trials that will take place on Friday and Saturday at Nyayo national stadium will be for selecting the team for the World Championships in athletics which will take place in Budapest, Hungary.

“Training has been going on well and we are hoping for the best at the trials,” said Gateri, the 2021 3000 metres World Under-20 Champion.
