Title favourites St Joseph’s Kitale yesterday handed defending champions Highway Secondary School a lifeline into the semis with a convincing 3-1 drubbing of Kiringari Secondary in their final preliminary match of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) ball games championship.

Highway Boys’ chances of advancing depended on the Saints’ triumph in their last Pool ‘B’ game against the Central Kenya representatives.

Highway, from Nairobi, beat coastal side Serani Secondary 2-0 to avoid an early exit and will now face 1984 champions Musingu High from Western in the first semi-final.

The versatile Kitale lads, popularly known as JOBO, will square off against Agai Secondary School from Nyanza in the other semi-final today.

JOBO top the Pool ‘B’ standings with nine points from three matches. Highway and Kiringari are tied on four points and a zero goal difference, but Kiringari edge ahead with fewer yellow cards.

In the last Pool ‘A’ match played at Mumias Sports Complex, Musingu beat Agai Secondary 1-0 to top the group and avoid an early clash with JoBo.

Moi Mbiruri defeated tournament whipping boys Garissa Secondary 4-1 in a formality match to claim victory but still finished behind second-placed Agai.

In girls’ football, hosts and defending champions Butere Girls made light work of Ruiru Secondary, beating them 3-0 to top the pool and set up a semi-final against Kobala Secondary from Homa Bay.

The second Western Kenya representatives, Madira Girls, whose inclusion was necessitated by a no-show from the North Eastern region, will meet Nasokol Girls from the Rift Valley in the other semi-final.

Nasokol secured their place after sharing the spoils 1-1 against Dr Charles in their last pool match to finish second on the log behind leaders Butere Girls.

Madira top the second pool with nine points after edging Nairobi’s Dagoreti 2-1 in their last preliminary match.

Kobala ensured Coast representatives Mwanambeyu from Kwale made an early exit from the games village with a 3-0 drubbing.
