Shujaa stage dazzling comeback to reach Safari 7s final

Kenya’s men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, fought back from behind to beat Zimbabwe 29-19 and reach the Safari 7s final at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

Shujaa started well, scoring early through Patrick Odongo after just a minute of play. Festus Shiasi then extended the lead with a well-taken try on the left wing to make it 10-0.

But Zimbabwe, known as the Cheetahs, hit back before halftime. Carlos Matamatema powered through tackles to cut the deficit to 10-7, and Edward Sigauke gave them the lead just before the break with another try.

Zimbabwe looked in control early in the second half, adding a third try to stretch their lead to 19-10. But Kevin Wambua’s charges refused to give up. George Ooro broke through to make it 19-15, sparking a strong comeback from the home side.

Nygel Amaitsa then crossed the line to put Kenya ahead 22-19 in a tense final few minutes. Shujaa held their shape and discipline as they pushed for the final blow. Vincent Onyala sealed the win with a decisive try, finishing off another smart offload from playmaker Samwel Asati.

Kenya teams eye double

The result booked Shujaa a place in the men’s final against Shogun Rugby, setting up a repeat of last year’s decider. Shogun narrowly beat Kenya Morans 14-12 in the other semifinal to earn their spot.

Fans at Nyayo Stadium celebrated both Shujaa and the Lionesses, who also advanced. Shujaa’s run to the final continued their fine form from Saturday’s group stages, where they went unbeaten after wins over UK Select, Walukuba Rugby, and the French Renegades.

The 2025 Safari 7s has once again shown Kenya’s growing strength in sevens rugby. With both the men’s and women’s teams in the finals, home fans will hope to see double victory as the tournament wraps up at Nyayo.
