Shadowy federations now put on notice
Sports federations will have to follow strict guidelines from the Ministry of Sports before they receive funding for their activities.
Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba who met all the local federation bosses for a consultative meeting at Kasarani yesterday, told them in their faces that the government will not entertain briefcase federations as far as public money is concerned.
He reminded them that they will be required to submit their budgets for international outings six months prior to any event as stipulated by the laws of the land also demanded that each and every federation have a physical address. The federations will also be required to reveal all their sources of income for a accountability purposes.
“Government is so serious about this order of working. Be accountable and transparent in your organisations. National team selections should also be free and fair so as to reflect the true potential of Kenya,” he said.
He added: “I have made it very clear that I want to work with every federation wether new or old.We want to walk the journey with everybody,new beginning and fresh start for all.”
Top on his agenda is to foresee the return to play at international stage for Kenya’s suspended sports federations such football, swimming and badminton.
“I am priotizing lifting of suspensions of the federations that are banned by the global bodies. I began with football and am keen to move to the next. When a federation is suspended it is the players and the coaches that suffer most since they earn a living from it. I have met FINA, the global federation for swimming and we have had continued conversation about the current situation in Kenya,” Namwamba said.
Athletics Kenya (AK) president retired general Jackson Tuwei noted the importance of such meetings with the ministry of sports as a yard stick to boost good working relationship.
“We are ready to work with the new Sports CS as Athletic Kenya. It is good that we now understand his policy and the government position,” he told People Sport.
More than 80 sports federations were present at the meeting and some were give opportunity to present their operations and calendar.
