Sensational Sande earns KCB plaudits after Driftwood triumph

Kenya Commercial Bank Rugby Team has congratulated youngster Dominic Sande following his impressive breakout bow with the Lions Den team in the concluded Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.

Taking to the X page on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, after knocking out Strathmore Leos to clinch the 2025 edition of the Driftwood circuit on Sunday, July 27, 2025, Bankers for his remarkable performance in only his first debut with the team.

The team wished the youngster more success as he angles for a fresh lease of life at the Den.

“At just 21, the soft-spoken but cheeky Sande Dominic @sande_dominic made his debut for KCB Rugby this weekend, and what a shift he put in! From Makueni Ravens to Daystar Falcons, and now representing the pride, this young lion is following in the footsteps of his idol, Jacob Ojee, Karibisheni kijana Lion Hearted Family,” the club statement read.

Sande was among the sizeable debutants in the Masimba squad who made their mark in the circuit held in Mombasa alongside Kenya Seven skipper George Ooro and Jenkins Kipruto.

Others who joined the trio on their debuts included Michael Wekesa and Stephen Onsumba.

Choices vindicated

Ooro, an experienced member of the Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, made a switch from Leos where he had been for four years, while Kipruto is a former Kabarak University player.

Ooro and Kipruto’s choices were both vindicated, with the duo playing an influential role in leading the Bankers’ charge.

Kipruto specifically contributed to four tries in the Driftwood series.

The Final vs Leos

Elvis Olukusi opened the scoring for KCB with a powerful carry over the line, giving them an early 5-0 lead. Moments later, Floyd Wabwire once again demonstrated his blistering speed, just as he had in the semi-final against Kabras, outrunning defenders to double the score, although the conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

As halftime approached, Olukusi struck again, diving over on the left wing for his second try of the match. The Bankers went into the break comfortably ahead at 15-0.

Despite Barnabas Owuor crossing over to bring Leos back into the game at 15-7, Dennis Mwanja’s team held on to claim their fourth Driftwood 7s crown.

Meanwhile, Kabras RFC claimed third place after a 21-10 victory over Nakuru RFC. Roy Maruti scored twice for the Sugarmen, while Brian Mutua added another try to cap off a solid campaign.
