Kenya’s motorsport fraternity is mourning the death of iconic Safari Rally navigator Mike Doughty, who passed away on Monday, May 19, in Nairobi, aged 88.

Doughty enjoyed a stellar career between 1973 and 1987 and is best remembered for winning the gruelling WRC Safari Rally four times alongside the legendary Shekhar Mehta, the most successful driver in the event’s history.

Their partnership delivered consecutive titles from 1979 to 1982, twice in a Datsun 160J and twice in a Nissan Violet GT.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from all corners of the sport, led by Kenya National Rally Championship trailblazer Ann Taieth, former FIA Vice President for Africa Surinder Thatthi, veteran rally organiser Jackie Holt, FIA African Rally Champion Don Smith, and driver Philip Kyriazi, who all hailed Doughty’s unwavering dedication to rallying.

“So, so sorry to hear this. I did one rally with Mike, which was great. So precise and prompt, a great organiser and left nothing to chance,” Taieth recalled. “He knew the routes inside out and produced excellent notes.”

“RIP Mike Doughty. A true legend,” Thatthi simply stated.

While reflecting on her early experiences, Holt said, “Mike was a motor rally legend. He took me under his wings when I decided to try heading radio communication. He was a no-nonsense person, but you always knew where you stood. Rest in peace, Mike.”

Kyriazi described Doughty as a man who “always wanted the best for every driver” but also expected hard work and grit.

“His Safari Rally routes were always tough and long stages with every element he could throw at you.”

Smith, the 2012 ARC winner, stated, “The best was seeing his smile as the rally was about to start! I’ll never forget it. His routes were spectacular, like the Cherengany at night and the stretch from Baringo to Laikipia.”
