Ryan Ogam: Fitting in Michael Olunga’s shoes is achievable

Speaking during a local TV interview on Monday night, September 1, 2025, Ogam said the comparison to Olunga was both motivating and pressuring.
“When I saw the interview, I think it was pressure for me, but also inspiration,” Ogam said. “Fitting in the shoes of our skipper, Michael Olunga, that’s a big task. But it’s achievable for me. Provided we have the coach, Benni McCarthy, being a striker himself and seeing what he achieved in his playing days, he’s helping me a lot in camp and with everything he’s coaching me.”
Ogam, who only switched to playing as a striker this season after starting his career in midfield, explained that McCarthy’s guidance has been crucial in his development.
“I was playing as a midfielder before. I just switched this season. I think it’s helping me a lot in terms of movement every day,” he added.
McCarthy backs Ogam’s rise
Earlier, Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy had tipped Ogam to be the heir to Olunga’s role in the national team.
“Ryan is important to the team; he probably will be leading the line for us when the campaign starts,” McCarthy said in July. “He can probably be the next Michael Olunga one day.”
The comparison is not lost on Olunga himself, who has praised Ogam’s quality following his heroics at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
“Ryan is a player of very good quality, and you could see that in his performance for the national team. This is what we need. It’s a good moment and an opportunity for other players to showcase their skills. We’ll work together to get the best out of each other, and that is in the best interest of the country,” Olunga said.
Ogam’s rise has been remarkable. Ryan Ogam only played 16 matches and scored 15 goals for Tusker, and has now become a key figure for the national team. The forward says he is focused on learning the striker’s craft every day, aiming to continue making an impact both for his club and country.
