Ruto: Mediocrity has no place in Kenya’s pursuit of athletic greatness
By Kiprono Keileb, October 2, 2025President William Ruto has challenged Kenyans to reject mediocrity and embrace excellence, urging the nation to draw inspiration from the discipline and sacrifice of its athletes.
Speaking during a ceremony at the State House to reward Kenyan champions from the Tokyo World Athletics Championships on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the President emphasises the importance of hard work, courage, and dedication in achieving greatness.
“Our athletes remind us that excellence is not given, but earned through sacrifice, discipline, hard work, and courage. This is an achievement that we must celebrate with pride, but more importantly, one that we must emulate as a nation in every other thing that we do,” President Ruto said.
He emphasised that every medal won is a testament not only to personal triumph but also a reminder for the country to strive for excellence in all spheres.

The President highlighted that Kenya’s reputation on the global stage comes with expectations.
“The world expects Kenya to lead, not follow. Mediocrity has no place in the Kenyan story,” he stated.
In his address, President Ruto urged citizens to adopt the same mindset of commitment and perseverance demonstrated by athletes, arguing that it should extend beyond sports to education, innovation, leadership, and other fields of national importance.
“Just as you train for gold, Kenya must train for excellence in every field, in education, innovation, leadership, among others. Average does not raise a flag, average does not unite a nation. Greatness and excellence do,” President Ruto added, stressing that collective ambition and high standards are vital for national progress.

The ceremony celebrated the achievements of Kenyan athletes who excelled at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships, a performance that drew global admiration.
By recognising their hard work, President Ruto sought to remind the country that discipline, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement are key ingredients not only in sports but in the growth and development of the nation.
“Our athletes remind us that excellence is not given, but earned through sacrifice, discipline, hard work, and courage,” the president stated

As Kenya looks ahead, the President’s message calls for a cultural shift toward striving for excellence in every endeavour. The accomplishments of the country’s athletes serve as a model, demonstrating that with focus, dedication, and courage, Kenyans can achieve remarkable feats that honour the nation and inspire future generations.
This gathering at State House was not just a celebration of athletic triumphs but a call for the entire nation to raise its standards, reject complacency, and pursue excellence in all areas of life.
