President William Ruto has hailed Under 17 Harambee Starlets for their resounding victory against neighbouring Uganda.

In a statement on Sunday, March 16, 2023, moments after the teens thrashed their counterparts 3-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium – Nairobi to book themselves a slot in the third round of FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers.

The youngsters are looking to qualify for their second FIFA World Cup fiesta in a row.

“Congratulations to our Under 17 Starlets team for a resounding 3-0 victory over Uganda in Nairobi this afternoon. Your triumph is a statement that Kenya’s young talents are ready to conquer the big stage. Your passion, discipline, and teamwork have inspired a nation. Let this be just the beginning. Keep the fire burning, keep striving for excellence, and let the world see what Kenya is made of,” Ruto stated.

The junior Starlets opened their accounts in the fourth minute as they expressed their dominance against the neighbours with a goal from Patience Asiko after a long ball from Judith Nandwa.

A brace from Brenda Achieng sealed the win for the Under 17 Starlets, sealing them a place in the third round.

“Winning away in the first leg gave us confidence, and today we secured another three points. Our teamwork has been crucial to our success,” Head Coach Mildred Cheche stated.

‎The Junior Starlets will now face Cameroon, who progressed after defeating Ethiopia 6-3 on aggregate.

‎”We are happy with the win and grateful for the support from fans and coaches. We are ready to face Cameroon in the next round,” ‎Team captain Halima Imbachi said.
