Retired athletes have expressed divergent views and opinions during a one-day National Heroes Council Stakeholders forum in Eldoret.
They have called for the establishment of a Hall of Fame and called upon the National Heroes Council to devolve their functions to the county level. The forum was covering counties from the North Rift region including Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana and Trans Nzoia Counties.
Deputy director in charge of Heroes Monument and Research David Mbuthia said they are transversing the country to gather views and opinions from stakeholders as they prepare to formulate an effective strategic plan for the year 2023/2027.
“We going around the country to get views from stakeholders which will be used to guide us on how best we can identify our heroes,” said Mbuthia.
peaking in Eldoret during the forum, former athlete world 3,000m steeplechase record holder Moses Kiptanui said that delocalization will ensure how the sportsmen and women should be honoured in the country.
Three-time world 3,000m steeplechase champion Kiptanui said that most of the retired athletes who have brought fame to the country have been neglected across the board.
