Randiek, Okutoyi make third round of World Tennis tournament
By People Daily, November 15, 2019Ryan Randiek and Angela Okutoyi sailed into the third round of the ITF Grade 5 World Tennis Tour Under 18 Championship at Nairobi Club yesterday.
Ninth-seed Randiek saw off Mani Parsaravesh of India in a straight set of 4-6, 6-1(10-4) in the morning contest.
Randiek lost the first set after failing to convert points especially on his serve and at the same time making errors on returns.
However in the second set, Randiek was more composed and efficient especially with his court movement. He went four straight games unanswered before his opponent picked a game while on serve.
However his clinical backhands were too much for Mani. The decider set saw him trade good shots on the net with the Indian challenger and only won it because of a series of errors on return. His power on serve also aided his cause as he broke the opponent twice.
Meanwhile second seed Angela Okutoyi defeated Madagascan rival Rasendra Andeliamantemina in straight sets of 7-6(9), 6-0 in the follow up match.
The first set proved tricky for the Kenyan second seed as it had to be decided on a super tie-break. Thrice she was broken, but the 2018 Kenya Open winner came through with resolute play to an even contest with her challenger.
Okutoyi however was guilty of poor return errors which made Rasendra fight back but ultimately she rose to the occasion in style.
The second set was a smooth sail for the Kenyan who just about did everything right as the Madagascar player wilted under pressure. Her first serve was a positive improvement.
Kenya’s other contenders Derrick Ominde and Wycliffe Okenye were ejected from the round of 32 despite putting in good fights.
Italian Matteo Covato got the better of eighth-seed Ominde 7-6(5), 5-7 (10-8) while Okenye went down against Cameroonian Paul Brunel Wamba in straight sets of 4-6,4-6.
