The Kenya Union of Journalists Secretary General Eric Oduor asked media houses to issue better employment terms to journalists in the country.

He warned a section of media houses who have failed to pay journalists their salaries even after offering services.

“Failing to pay journalists salaries is a form of impunity that must be dealt with exhaustively. I urge all media houses to pay journalists for the good work they are doing,” said Oduor.

He spoke during celebrations to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI) in Nairobi, yesterday.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) wants prosecutors and judicial officers trained on measures and strategies to address the increasing crimes against journalists.

DPP Renson Ingonga yesterday said such training will be significant in ensuring that those who harm journalists while on duty are expeditiously prosecuted.

He wants this done through collaboration and coordination of external and internal stakeholders that he describes as an essential step in the fight against impunity and injustice.

“I’ll pursue strategies that foster close collaboration between my office and Kenya media stakeholders to enhance information sharing and the exchange of ideas. This will end impunity for crimes committed against journalists and ensure a transparent and accountable system,” Ingonga said.

During the commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI), the chief prosecutor shared the measures he has taken to support journalists in their fight against impunity and mistreatment.

The DPP’s assurance came hours after brutal attack and harassment of two journalists in Baringo and Bungoma counties respectively.
