Opening match of ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League A sees Kenya take control, restricting Jersey to 207 runs
Kenya’s quest for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) began in earnest following a six-wicket victory yesterday at Ruaraka Sports Grounds during the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League A.
Captain Rakep Patel led the charge in a steady chase after opting to field in the opening innings, where Jersey was all out for 207. Kenya pursued the target successfully, scoring 208-4 in 38.4 overs.
Patel was the star with the bat, scoring 84 runs off 76 balls, including nine boundaries and a hat-trick of sixes.
Irfan Karim, batting at number four, formed a formidable partnership at the crease alongside Patel, contributing 58 runs off 86 balls with six boundaries to his name.
In the past five meetings between the two nations, Kenya leads with a record of 3-2. The opening innings of this CWC duel saw Jersey restricted to a total of 207/10 in 48.4 overs.
Jonty Jenner (47 runs off 33 balls) and Nick Greenwood (41 runs off 77 balls) led the charge, both contributing five boundaries and a six.
However, the duo were dismissed by the experienced Rakep Patel.
Other notable run-scorers for Jersey included Charles Perchard (37 runs off 51 balls) and Josh Lawrenson (35 runs off 32 balls), both ejected by Peter Langat and Shem Ngoche in the 14th and 48.4 overs, respectively.
Patel had an incredible six-wicket haul, claiming his wickets in just nine overs while conceding 28 runs.
On the other hand, Jersey struggled with their fielding, particularly in the latter stages of the match, allowing the dominant Patel to take control.
Kenya deployed an interesting batting order with Pushkar Sharma (11 runs off 36 balls), Neil Mugabe (17 runs off 21 balls) and Dhiren Gondaria (14 runs off 13 balls) as the three openers. Jersey’s Julius Sumerauer led with a two-wicket haul for his team.
Kenya’s next challenge is against Denmark today, marking the first meeting between the European side and the African team.
