Olympian Emily Muteti feels Kenyan swimmers are up to the task during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Muteti is among the eight Kenyan swimmers that will fly the country’s flag at the Club Games.

Four foreign-based swimmers are expected to make their debut at the global games.

The swimming competition is set to be held from today until Wednesday next week and will be spread across 52 events, including 12 para-swimming events.

The team will look back to Delhi Games in 2010 for inspiration where the country hauled 32 medals; 12 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze with all the medals coming from athletics except three; one gold in swimming and two bronze in boxing.

Golden moments came from legendary swimmer Jason Dunford, who claimed victory in the men’s 50m butterfly.

“I know we are capable of good results in the global competition, I have confidence in the team that was selected,” said Muteti.

“I’m better placed than I was a year ago. I tend to use every opportunity I get to better and improve myself as a swimmer,” said Muteti based in the United States who was Kenya’s only representative in women’s swimming at the Tokyo Olympic Games and now she will represent Kenya in 100m freestyle.

Women’s category

Four swimmers in the men’s and women’s categories were selected by the Kenya Swimming Federation after successful national trials at the Moi International Sports Centre Swimming Complex in May.

Muteti will lead the women’s side which comprises 21-year-old Thorpe Imara Bella (100m Butterfly), Rebecca Kamau (Individual Medley 200m) and Brunlehner Maria (50m Freestyle).
