Laikipia County government has set aside Sh2 million for refurbishing the Nyahururu stadium ahead of Rift Valley secondary schools regional ball games.
The acting Executive for Youth and Sports, Stephen Kisorio said the money will be used for improving the track and sanitation facilities at the world-famous stadium in readiness for the games set for next month.
He said fans barrier-fence will be repaired to keep fans a safe distance from pitches during games.
“The money has been allocated and the work will start in the next two weeks,” Kisorio said at the weekend during selection of County volleyball teams for the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association (Kyisa) competition set for Tharaka Nithi County in a week’s time.
Athletes who train at the stadium have been appealing the devolved unit to improve the track surface of the facility, which has produced champions and world record breakers, to cushion them against injuries.
Kisorio said the track will get a new layer of murram and sad dust as requested by the runners. Kisorio who is the County substantive Executive for Education said further improvement of the stadium will be carried out during the next financial year, “as the County waits to partner with national government to upgrade the facility to national standard.
He said the partnership between the two levels of government is currently focusing on upgrading the Nanyuki stadium.
Nyahururu will host the Term Two secondary schools ball games late next month, according to the secretary of Laikipia County Secondary Schools Sports Federation, Peter Waweru. He said the programme of the games will be released soon.
Kisorio urged youths to take their sporting talent seriously saying it can be their stepping stone to employment.
“Those who will go to Tharaka Nithi should put their best effort because you never know you might be spotted by people scouting for sporting talents to employ,” he said.
He said the police, Kenya Defence Forces and clubs are always scouting for talented people to join their sports teams.
