Nakuru RFC vs Oilers derby clash highlights Day 2 of Prinsloo 7s circuit
By Luke Oluoch, August 3, 2025A fierce derby pitting Menengai Oilers and Nakuru Rugby Football Club is looming large as the action of the Prinsloo Circuit enters its second day at the Nakuru Athletics Club this Sunday, August 3, 2025.
The two teams head into the main Cup quarterfinal clash after posting impressive performances in the group stages, with the Oilers dominating in a group comprising the university trio of Day Star, Strathmore, and Zetech.
The Oilers’ run has been nothing short of stunning, with a victory against the Strathmore Leos and sealing their unbeaten status in the group stages.
The Nakuru-based side had dispatched Day Star University and Zetech on 33-5 and 24-5 scorelines, respectively, in its early group engagements.
Nakuru RFC on one defeat
On their part, the Nakuru RFC, captained by Morans skipper Christant Ojwang, will be eyeing better tides and improvement to their Driftwood series, where they just fell short of a semifinal berth.
Oilers, who finished at the podium in last year’s circuit, have also had their moments in the game and are among the top contenders in the current circuit on home soil.
The club secured two back-to-back wins against Nondies and Mombasa Rugby to start off their series on home soil in an emphatic fashion.
They, however, succumbed to a narrow 12-15 loss to Kenya Harlequins in their final Group B match, albeit having done enough to secure their progress to the next stages.
Game approach
Speaking ahead of the Saturday clash against Leos, Oilers Head Coach Geoffrey Ominde highlighted the importance of taking each game as it comes and seeing where the approach takes them.
“We cannot jump the gun yet. We have to face Leos first as we seek to qualify for the quarters, and then we see what comes next,” he said following the team’s back-to-back wins in the group stage.
Meanwhile, in other clashes, Kenya Harlequins, who got eliminated in the Driftwood circuit by Nakuru RFC, will square off against Strathmore Leos in an early clash kicking off at 9:52 am.
The tie will then be followed by Lavin Asego’s Mwamba team up against the Catholic Monks at 10:11 am before the much-hyped Nakuru derby takes centre stage at 10:30 am.
Mwamba will be seeking to extend their giant-killing run after they produced the shock of the Day 1 games by upsetting Kabras Sugar 17-15 in the group phase.
Kabras Sugar and KCB will face off in another mouthwatering main cup quarter matchup at 10:49 am. The clash sees a renewal of rivalry after the bankers edged the Western 2024 Main Cup champions in the Driftwood semifinals a week ago.
