Nairobi, Mombasa counties clinch KICOSCA titles in chess, draughts

Nairobi County are the 2023 Kenya Inter-Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) Chess champions.
Nairobi won the coveted title after finishing the marathon campaign on 25 points same as rivals Kericho County.
The two teams were separated by a tie-breaker of 208 and 177 points respectively. Migori County came third with 24 points.
Individually, Jacob Onditi from Migori County won gold after finishing with nine points followed by Titus Ndugire with 7.5 points (Embu) and Charles Gathara with 7 points (Nairobi).
On the other hand, Mombasa County won their 18th straight Draughts title after finishing their category unbeaten in Kisumu. Mombasa won all 11 games played at Kassagam Secondary School.
Speaking after their win, Mombasa coach Seif Kassim said training and consistency has helped them in their unbeaten win in Kisumu.
“Today is a very good day for us because we have emerged winners. My team, a group of 6 who has always been committed and are usually training have lifted our names high here in the Lakeside city,” he said. He added, “At least now the draught players can lobby for recognition from the government just like other games are well recognised,” Douglas Muliwa, Isaac Okoth, Salim Mwasina, Bakari Sarai, Omar Munai and Kassim are the player who represented Mombasa.
Kilifi County led by Wilson Godana finished second with 18 points followed by Embu County.
