The second edition of the Nairobi City Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, ushers in a turning point, with the race now commencing on Douglas Wakiihuri Road (formerly Aerodrome Road), instead of Lang’ata Road.
Race Director Ibrahim Hussein said that the finishing points for the full marathon (42km) and the 10 km will be different from the Half Marathon (21km) and the 6km race.
We have made the changes to curb congestion and avoid accidents. This year we will also run along the traffic and use the expressway and once complete, the race will finish with the runners using the Nyayo National Stadium basketball court gym gate,” said Ibrahim, the three times former Boston Marathon champion.
So far, 3,500 runners have confirmed participation with 2022 Frankfurt Marathon Champion Brimin Misoi coming back to defend the 42km title he won during the inaugural edition.
Once race starts, runners will join the Expressway after the Bunyala roundabout towards Westlands. They will then continue on the expressway, turn after the James Gichuru roundabout, head back and exit the Expressway at the Museum Hill exchange before making a U-turn at the National Museum of Kenya gate on Harry Thuku Road.
From there, they will turn right after the central police station to university way, go round and join Koinange Street, turn left to Kenyatta Avenue and right to Kimathi Street.
There will be a right-turn at the Dedan Kimathi statue in the heart of the city, then exit to the City Hall way, U-turn at Holy Family Basilica, back to Taifa Road and then on to Harambee Avenue.
A left=turn at parliament roundabout towards Haille Sellasie and another left back to the Expressway then head straight to Nyayo Stadium and finish the race through the basketball gym gate.
