Musingu Scorpions sting on Agai Mixed sparks storm
By Bosco Magare and Douglas Dindi, August 2, 2025Drama, protests and late miracles marked the national secondary schools’ ball games as hosts Musingu Boys qualified for the semis amid allegations of fielding an imposter, while rivals Agai Mixed Secondary were persuaded to drop their petition, assured of a slot at the upcoming East Africa Championships thanks to Kenya’s status as hosts.
In an exclusive interview on August 1, 2025, with People Daily, Agai Boys’ football team head coach Gordon Akoko said Musingu Scorpions were allegedly aided in their 1-0 victory over the Nyanza regional champions by fielding an imposter player.
“Musingu beat us 1-0 during the last Pool ‘A’ preliminary group stage match. However, Musingu engaged in impersonation by fielding an imposter, a lethal player, Steve Onyango, who during last year’s ball games played for Kisumu Day under his bona fide name, Benard Stanley,” Agai allegedly said.
He continued, “We were prepared to file a petition with the national ball games jury against hosts Musingu Secondary School boys’ football team for engaging in impersonation. However, we decided to withhold our petition after being prevailed upon by some national ball games officials.”
“We were reminded and assured that Agai Mixed Secondary School’s boys’ football team and three other teams (St Joseph’s, hosts Musingu, and Nairobi-based Highway Secondary, which qualified for the semis) had similarly qualified to represent the country and compete at the East Africa schools championship, since Kenya was hosting the East Africa ball games this year in Kakamega,” Akoko further alleged.
Akoko said since the championship organisers, Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), had assured them four boys’ teams, among them Agai, have qualified for the upcoming East Africa schools’ ball games, they decided to withhold filing the petition.
“So, although Agai lost 0-1 against Musingu in the last Pool ‘A’ preliminary group stage match, we reconsidered filing our petition against the victors for engaging in player impersonation since we will participate and compete at the East Africa ball games as part of Team Kenya,” Akoko explained.
People Daily has established from Kobala Mixed Secondary School principal and his Agai counterpart, Akoko, that both teams (Musingu and Agai), including two others, St Joseph’s Kitale and Highway Secondary, have qualified for the EA ball games, alongside an equal number of four girls’ football sides: Madira, Kobala, Nasokol and Butere Girls.
Akoko explained more about Musingu allegedly engaging in impersonation during their match against the hosts.
Kenya will also present four teams in all other disciplines for being the championship host.
In the girls’ football category, Kobala qualified for the semis against defending champions Butere Girls after thrashing coastal side Mwanambeyu 3-0 at Mukumu Girls sports ground, through a direct kick by Brenda Awuor in the 16th minute, while other scores were rifled in by Tracy Nollys in the 54th minute following a Faye Lilian cross, and through Beffine Shaley in the 68th minute after pouncing on a goalkeeper-parried rebound shot by teammate Tracy.
Elsewhere, Madira Girls took on Nasokol Secondary School girls’ football team in another semi-final match played at Kakamega Secondary School on Friday, August 1.
The East Africa and national volleyball girls’ champions, Kwanthanze Girls from the Eastern region, cruised to the final after making light work of Nairobi’s Soweto 3-0 in a match that lasted less than one hour.
Kwanthanze were literally in a class of their own, with winning sets (25-17, 25-12, and 25-13) to set up a repeat clash against their preliminary group rivals, Kesogon Girls from the Rift Valley.
In that Pool ‘B’ clash, Kwanthanze prevailed 3-0, and it remains to be seen whether Kesogon will turn the tables. Kesogon forced the host team, Bishop Sulumeti Girls, cheered on by their MP Nabii Nabwera, to swallow humble pie with a 3-0 thrashing.
The Bishop’s girls fell (29-31, 23-25, and 15-25) and will watch the finals from the sidelines at the Masinde Muliro University grounds.
