Multi-talented athlete Tabunda eyes glory in Mauritius
World Relay mixed shuttle bronze medallist Priscilla Tabunda says it takes hard work and self-belief to juggle between track and field events.
The veteran athlete is eyeing a good outing at this year’s Africa Senior Athletic Championships that run from June 8 to 12 at Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Reduit, Mauritius.
“I always say you cannot fail to reap rewards if you work hard in whatever you do. That’s the spirit required to succeed in this profession. You have to possess a passion for it in the first place. Also, listen to your coach and follow instructions,” explained Tabunda who will be making her fourth appearance at the Africa Senior Athletic Championships.
Among field events that Tabunda has competed in are; pole vault and long jump in Durban and Asaba.
“My ambition is to set a new record in 100m hurdles and also fight for medals. My next focus will be to mould another talent who will be able to break my record. It would be a great feeling for me,” she said.
Training under coaches William Murgor and Caroline Kola at the Nyayo National Stadium for the last three weeks, Tabunda feels she is ready for competition.
“I am perfecting my hurdles technique, especially the attack. It is needless to be fast when the technique isn’t there,” disclosed Tabunda who will continue to push on her quest to make it to the World Championships.
Meanwhile, World Under 20 champion Jackline Chepkoech is upbeat as she prepares to battle with the seniors for the first time.
