More than 200 participants set to take part in national para-athletic championships
More than 200 participants are expected at the Kenya National Paralympic Committee (KNPC) national championships to be held at the Kenyatta University main campus today and tomorrow.
According to the organisers, the two-day national championship is geared towards identifying talented upcoming athletes and assees status of current para athletes who shall represent Team Kenya in subsequent national, regional and international IPC events and Paralympic games.
According to Dennis Muga, the Local Organising Committee chairman for the two-day high profile event, the shpiece will include all field and track events.
“Participants are expected from all parts of the country and athletes will compete in short races like 100m, 200m, 400m as well as middle and long distance races like 800m, 1500m and 5000m. Field events like javeline, shot put and discus throws, both standing and seated throws will also be competed in,” Muga told People Daily Sport.
He added: “All classes will be included for visual impairments and physical impairments. The national championships will also give a chance to new athletes to be identified assessed by certified classifiers and to get classified.”
The event organisers believe that the trials will be able to identify potential talents that can be nurtured in preparations for future international championships building up to LA28 Paralympic Games.
After managing only a single medal at the Paris 2024 Games, KNPC in their post moterm meeting, vowed to embark on early preparations ahead of the next Games to enable participation in many events and stop over relliance on track events which have previously brought the country glory. They intend to start the transformation with the national trials.
“The trials are open for both community members and special school students who are interested in para-sports. Quite a number of special schools have been invited and confirmed participation, the schools who will have representation include Joytown Special Schools, Nalondo Primary and Secondary Special Schools and Thika School for the blind among others,” Muga said.
KU are officially collaborating with KNPC for the trials, KU will provide volunteers during the trials.
